Benefits of Homemade Air Fryer Chicken Sweet Potato Chips
All natural – they only contain sweet potatoes and chicken bone broth.
Full of fiber – Dogs need a healthy digestive system too, and sweet potatoes are packed with fiber.
Sweet potatoes are low in fat and calories, so they don't contribute to weight gain.
Vitamin Rich – The ’re full of essential vitamins like Beta-Carotene and Vitamin C.
For making these treats, I like using the Air Fryer. The air fryer gets all the moisture out of the treats and makes them crunchy.
I slice the sweet potatoes into thin slices about ⅜" thick using a mandoline slicer, which keeps them all the same size.
Dehydration time varies but usually takes about 8 hours. You want to get as much moisture out of them as you can so they stay crispy and last longer.
Other Ways to Make Sweet Potato Chips
If you don’t own an air fryer, you can also make the treats using your oven or dehydrator.
Use the Oven – An oven at a low temperature of around 200° degrees Fahrenheit will dry out the sweet potato treats as well. Timing will vary but will take about 6-8 hours.
Use a Dehydrator – This dehydrator is the one I have. It has large trays, plus it works on sweet potato chips. My dehydrator will dry out the sweet potato slices in about 10 hours.
Homemade Sweet Potato Dog Treats Tips
Sweet potatoes either organic or conventional work well, so pick whatever you like.
Leave the Peel on – You can wash and dry the sweet potatoes with leaving the peel on. The skin helps to provide extra nutrients.
Slice your sweet potatoes thin – I use a mandoline to slice the sweet potatoes into ⅜” slices. Evenly sliced sweet potatoes dehydrate at the same rate and more evenly.
If You Think They Need to Dehydrate Longer, They Do – If you’re thinking about if the Sweet Potatoes need to dry longer; they do. No moisture is what you want in the treats, mainly because you don’t want them to mold.
Homemade Sweet Potato Dog Treats are easy, cheap, and tasty for your dog. They are also people-friendly if you want to try one. Try this recipe and see if your dog loves them as much as mine does.
How to Make Air Fryer Chicken Sweet Potato Chips for Dogs
Ingredients:
- 1 Large Sweet Potato
- 1 Cup Chicken Bone Broth
Supplies Needed:
- Air Fryer
- Mixing Bowl
Directions:
Step 1: Slice the potato into slices that are about as thick as a quarter. I find it best to use a mandoline to keep them evenly sliced.
Step 2: Pour broth over slices and soak for at least 3 hours or overnight. Flip them a few times to make sure everything has time to soak in the bone broth.
Step 3: Place the slices on the air fryer tray so that they do not overlap. Cook on 400 for 3 minutes, then reduce heat to 300 and cook for another 5 minutes. If your slices are cut to thick, they may need to cook a little longer at the lower temperature.
Give the remaining bone broth to your dog in the dog food.
How Long Are Homemade Sweet Potato Dog Treats Good For
The dog treats keep for 2-3 weeks at room temperature in an airtight container.
If there's any mold or discoloration on the sweet potatoes after a couple weeks, there's probably moisture left in them. Get rid of the rest of the treats.
