Luckily, homemade dog treats don’t have to be expensive. In fact, not only are they easy to make, but you can make them for pennies and they’ll still be delicious.
This chicken sweet potato gummies for dog treats recipe is super easy to make and is sure to be a hit with your furry friend.
It isn’t as hard as you think to make a dog treat recipe you’ll feel good about. A great example of this are these chicken, sweet potato gummy dog treats: they only have three ingredients, and you probably have them in your kitchen right now.
Using Bone Broth in Dog Treat Recipes
For this recipe, we enjoy using a dog safe chicken bone broth. We bought the bone broth for this recipe online, but we’ve also made our own chicken bone broth.
Bone broth has become popular as an alternative health remedy for humans and dogs alike. It's made from boiling animal bones, so it's loaded with calcium and magnesium. You can also use bone broth as a base for soups, stews, and other foods.
Bone broth is a healthy homemade treat for both dogs and humans. By using bone broth, you can use the broth to make gummies from scratch.
Whether you make it from scratch or purchase a dog safe bone broth online, the quality of store-bought broth shares many of the benefits.
Benefits of Bone Broth in Dog Treats
The ‘active ingredients’ in bone broth dog treats are collagen (a protein) and Glycine (an amino acid) which are both found in bone broth.
- Collagen helps your pup's coat, skin and digestion.
- Glycine is anti-inflammatory and good for bones and joints and brain health.
In the wild, dogs eat gelatin from their prey’s skin, bones, tendons, and cartilage.
The majority of our dog gummy recipes are packed with nutritious and healthy gelatin.
Of course, other ingredients in dog gummies will offer their own benefits and nutrition, which combined with gelatin makes these tiny, wobbly, fun little treat nutritionally dense and delicious.
You'll want to avoid bone broths that contain sugar or artificial sweeteners, or other colors or additives when making gummies for your pup. All of those are bad for your dog.
I like the CARU Daily Dish Chicken Broth for Dogs and Cats (you can find it in most grocery stores or online on Amazon).
You should ALWAYS avoid giving your dog anything that contains Xylitol, since it is poisonous to dogs.
Basic Chicken Sweet Potato Gummies for Dogs
Making gummies for your dog are really easy and can be done in a few different ways.
I found this is the easiest (and fool-proof) way to make treats. You can use it to make savory or sweet ones depending on the ingredients you use.
How to store dog gummy treats
You should store gummy dog treats in the refrigerator to prevent them from getting soggy and sticky. They also mold quickly, so check them often.
If you want gummies to last longer, it's best to spread them out on a plate, tray, or sheet of wax paper and leave them in the fridge uncovered for several hours or overnight. It will help them keep their shape.
Or, you can put them into some cornstarch before putting them in an airtight container and refrigerating them to absorb any extra moisture.
Gummy Dog Treat Recipe Variations
Bone broth is my go-to because it’s so healthy and nutritious for your dog's, but you can also use chicken, beef, or vegetable stock as an alternative, or low sodium broth.
You can add any of the following to your pet's gummies:
- Finely chopped fresh parsley
- Finely chopped fresh mint
- Kale leaves (I’d suggest pureeing these first)
- Grated carrot
- Finely shredded chicken or turkey breast
- Pureed sweet potato
- Pureed pumpkin
- Savory stage one baby food
- Dog Safe Creamy peanut butter (works in both savory and sweet gummies)

I can’t wait to try this recipe! How long can they be stored in the refrigerator before they need to be eaten?
Thank you,

Hi Andrea, I have two dogs so we go through them pretty quickly, but you can safely store them for up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator. Enjoy the treats!
